オバマ演説とマックス・ウェーバー『職業としての政治』

　何だこれは？と思うかもしれないし、何となく判ると思うかも知れない。
　オバマ大統領の演説をネットで読んだとき、マックス・ウェーバーを思い出したのである。どこか奥の深いところで似ている。当然、『職業としての政治』をオバマ氏は読んでいるはずである。

　脇圭平氏の名訳からマックス・ウェーバー『職業としての政治』の最後のくだりを引用しよう（「政治的人間」所収 平凡社 1968）。

　「…我々の目の前にあるのは花咲き乱れる初夏ではなく、
　　さし当たっては凍てついた厳しい極北の夜である。…

　　政治とは情熱と判断力の二つを駆使しながら堅い板に
　　力を込めて少しずつ穴をあけていく作業である。…

…しかし、これをなしうる人は指導者でなければならない。
　　いや指導者であるだけでなく、
　　ーはななだ素朴な意味でのー英雄でなければならない。
　　　そして指導者や英雄でない場合でも、
　　人はどんな希望の挫折にもめげない堅い意志でいますぐ
　　武装する必要がある。…」

　さて、オバマ大統領の認識は、
　「…That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. …」

　過去を引用して指導者ではない普通のmen and womenの働きを賞賛する。
　自らのことは言わないが指導者としての認識はウェーバーと同じであろう。

　「…In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that
　　greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has
　 never been one of short-cuts or settling for less.
It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who
prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches
and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers,
the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and
women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long,
rugged path towards prosperity and freedom. …」
